was told by herteacher, Miss Hypatia Boyd, of Helen Keller, whichwas her first knowledge of there being any otherperson blind and deaf like herself. She was in-stantly fired to write to Helen. On my being askedif Helen would be likely to reply, I said that shemost certainly would, if she were made acquaintedwith the circumstances. I knew how exceedinglybusy Helen was, and that hundreds of letters toher had to go without reply ; but I knew well thatthat exquisite heart could not refrain from answer-ing such an appeal. Helens answer is appended,and, in considering it, it must be remembered thatHelen was carefully writing to come within theknowledge of language of a pupil not then one fullyear in school, to which she had gone a total blank. He is very funny, andso affectionate that sometimes when he runs to meetus and jumps on me, he almost throws me down.The other day a little black and white dog, whichhad lost its way, came into our apartment, and itmade Phiz jealous to see us pet it. The two dogstried to fight; but we would not let them bite eachother. We gave the little dog to a man to takehome to his children, but it ran away. I supposethe poor little fellow wanted to get back to his home. I do not read much for fun. I have to study allthe time, but I am reading a book called Alice inWonderland.
